Student DevOps/Integration Engineer, Specialized Computing Environments (Jamason) / STDT IT

Job Description:
 Are you interested in applying your DevOps skills to improve UC San Diego’s instructional and research computing platforms? We are seeking student employees to join our team of engineers supporting the Specialized Computing Environments service, including the Data Science / Machine Learning Platform (DSMLP) and Amazon Web Services Educate (AWSEd) offerings.

DSMLP provides Jupyter Python/R/Julia notebooks for instruction, and uses machine-learning technologies such as TensorFlow and PyTorch. It runs on the python-based JupyterHub platform and leverages Docker and Kubernetes container technologies. AWSEd enables users to access AWS functionality such as EC2 instances.    

The successful incumbent will work with the EdTech Ecosystems team to evaluate, implement and document improvements for the above services. Job duties include creation of custom course Docker images, system integration projects, and back-end middleware development. The DevOps/Integration Engineer will also help answer support.ucsd.edu tickets from faculty, TAs, and students.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Commitment to work a minimum of 12 hours/week during non-midterm/finals weeks, and share availability via Outlook Calendar
  • Ability to work in a team environment and use collaboration tools such as MS Teams
  • Proficient knowledge of one or more relevant academic disciplines, such as Bioengineering, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Data Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Neurophysiology
  • Demonstrated programming capability in Python, and competency using Git-based version control.
  • Basic knowledge of DevOps and systems integration concepts. Proficiency with Unix/Linux environments.
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation for non-technical audiences.  
Preferred:
  • Experience tutoring, teaching, or providing technical customer support in a higher education environment.
  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux shell scripting, Java
  • Familiarity with the Jupyterhub platform (datahub.ucsd.edu) and jupyter notebooks
  • Familiarity with building Docker container images and deploying to hub repositories

Work study may be used (Please include work study information in your Cover Letter and/or Resume.). Must pay UCSD Student Services fees each quarter working.
